Farm History

Background
Rusty and Martin Cook established Caballos del Sol with their marriage in August of 1993 and the subsequent merger of two existing horse breeding operations.  Located in the beautiful south valley area of Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Caballos del Sol breeding program focused around the chestnut stallion Wild Flame, a Bask Flame son out of Coyote, a  part Spanish mare.   He consistently produced beautiful athletes with long legs, long necks, typey Arabian heads, and less white than their dams.  He stamped both his Purebred and his Half-Arabian foals with his beauty and outstanding disposition.

The horses of Caballos del Sol are raised with love and kindness.  As three-year-olds they are started under saddle, with patience and consistency.  Once they master a few basic concepts, they are exposed to a variety of situations, both in the arena and on the trail, with other horses and alone.  Professional trainers are selected on the basis of their humane treatment of the horses and their compatibility with the individual horse.  Each horse is trained in the discipline it is best suited for, with no pre-conceived notion of what we "want it to be."  Our horses have dispositions suitable for youth or amateur riders and handlers.  As breeders we believe in disposition first, then athletic ability, which goes hand-in-hand with conformation.

This Arabian breeding program has always been very small in scale but has produced horses that have been unusually successful in the show ring.  They have proven to be versatile athletes, and well suited to many disciplines.

Show Ring Success

The first foal, and the first champion, was Sun Danser (1978 grey gelding, Sun Bask x Coyote) who began his winning ways by being named New Mexico Halter Futurity Champion.   He went on to win in English Pleasure, Hunter Pleasure, Hunter Hack, Working Hunter, and Jumper.   He was Region 8 Champion in Working Hunter (twice), US Top Ten Working Hunter (twice), and US NATIONAL CHAMPION JUMPER in 1993.  He also showed successfully in Gelding In-Hand, English Show Hack, Mounted Native Costume, Western Pleasure and Trail.  He was a champion in open jumping against all breeds.
Flames Carousel (1981 chestnut mare, Bask Flame x Coyote) was from the first foal crop of Bask Flame.  Carousel was a halter winner and New Mexico Halter Futurity Champion as a yearling, she was Scottsdale Top Ten in Halter as a two-year-old in a class of 93 gorgeous fillies and won a Most Classic Arabian title before retiring to the broodmare band.  She made a brief reappearance in the show ring in Hunter Pleasure at age of 15.
Magik Flame (1982 chestnut gelding, Bask Flame x Lady Sabra) also began his show career as a winner of the New Mexico Halter futurity.  He went on to win Championships in Gelding In-Hand, Hunter Pleasure, Country English Pleasure, and English Show Hack.  He was Region 8 Champion and US National Top Ten English Show Hack.
Wild Flame (1983 chestnut stallion, Bask Flame x Coyote) was also New Mexico Halter Futurity Champion.  He had an extensive show career that included wins in Halter, English Show Hack, Hunter Pleasure, English Pleasure, and Mounted Native Costume.  Outside the show ring he was an ambassador for the breed, participating in numerous events such as organized trail rides, Native costume demonstrations, and various publicity appearances for the Arabian Horse Association of New Mexico and the International Arabian Horse Association.
Coys Flame (1985 chestnut mare, Bask Flame x Coyote) was orphaned at birth and raised on a bottle.  In spite of her rough start, she was a winner in Western Pleasure in a very brief show career.
Rockin Flame (1994 chestnut Half-Arabian gelding, Wild Flame x JRDS Rosebud [Paint]) again started his show career as a New Mexico Halter Futurity Champion.  He had additional championships in HA/AA Gelding In-Hand Stock/Hunter, and wins in Western Pleasure and Hunter Pleasure.
Flaming Roses (1995 chestnut overo pinto mare, Wild Flame x JRDS Rosebud [Paint]) was the first pinto produced by Caballos del Sol.  She was many times HA/AA Champion Mare, both as a Junior and a Senior horse.  She was Region 8 Top Five Hunter Pleasure Jr. Horse and had wins in Sport Horse Mares In-Hand and Sport Horse Under Saddle.

Frost 'n Flame (1999 chestnut overo pinto mare, Wild Flame x JRDS Rosebud[Paint]), exported to Canada as a weanling, was Region 18 Champion Yearling Half-Arabian filly and went on to garner wins in Sport Horse Mares In-Hand, Hunter Pleasure, Sport Horse Under Saddle, and Hunter Hack.  She was Region 18 Reserve Champion Sport Horse Mare In-Hand, and Top 3 Hunter Hack.
Flames Mistique (2001 chestnut mare, Wild Flame x JRDS Rosebud [Paint]) won in HA/AA Mare Breeding.  She has yet to begin her performance career.
Flaming Desyre (2001 chestnut mare, Wild Flame x Eci'ja) is the last foal sired by Wild Flame.  She was New Mexico Halter Futurity Champion, and is a Mare Breeding Champion as well.  She is a Champion in Hunter Pleasure, and is Region 8 Champion Hunter Hack and Working Hunter.  She is taking time off from her performance career to produce a foal.
AA Enchanted Flame (2003 chestnut mare, Bask Flame x Eci'ja) is from the last foal crop of Bask Flame.  She is a winner in Mare Breeding, and is just beginning her performance career in Western Pleasure.
